How Trimble Is Harnessing ITS to Transform the Future of Transportation
In a world where technological advancements shape the future of the transportation industry, Trimble stands at the forefront of innovation, particularly in the realm of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), a unique system that combines classic transportation infrastructure and vehicles with smart information and communication technology.
On November 9, Trimble, alongside eight other technology providers, received certification from Smartwayz, the Dutch government agency for its development and integration of ITS data in the Netherlands. This certification stands as a testament to Trimble's unwavering commitment to contributing to a more sustainable and connected future and marks a significant step forward in the evolution of the transportation industry.
ITS is a cutting-edge infrastructure, composed of smart devices and sensors strategically placed along roads. These devices communicate crucial information about the road environment to vehicles and drivers, and this information can ultimately be used to improve the overall transportation experience.
ITS functionality takes many shapes. Think of weather sensors that relay data about road conditions, smart traffic lights that optimize traffic flow, and beacons at construction sites to warn of potential hazards. This technology creates a connected ecosystem that aims to enhance safety, efficiency, and convenience for everyone on the road.
Trimble has seamlessly integrated this data into our telematics system, whilst also enhancing the functionality of our commercial navigation application: CoPilot. By incorporating this data, we are able to provide drivers with precise warnings regarding imminent hazards along their route. These warnings, known as Contextual-ITS (C-ITS), are carefully designed to alert drivers without causing distraction and navigate them safely.
In addition, the system offers the capability to request Green Light Priority, a feature traditionally utilized by emergency services and inner-city public transport.
When the calculated route passes through a smart traffic light, the system will be notified of an approaching commercial vehicle and automatically initiate a request for green light priority as the vehicle nears the light. Once priority is granted, the traffic light will switch to green before the truck reaches the junction.
The benefit for the truck is obvious. Not having to stop at a traffic light results in notable reductions in fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and noise pollution. Avoiding the stop and accelerate cycle contributes to a more efficient and environmentally friendly journey and drivers are able to reach their destinations faster and with reduced stress.
Looking ahead, it's crucial to acknowledge that ITS infrastructure is still evolving. Trimble's commitment to innovation means that our services, features, and timelines may adapt in response to these changes. As the infrastructure matures, anticipate the introduction of additional services like Green Light Speed Advisory or Time-to-Green Advise, extending their availability not only in the Netherlands but globally. Trimble continues to lead the way in shaping the future of transportation with ITS technology.
