Trimble’s Kelly Williams Discusses Productivity in Trucking at FreightWaves Enterprise Fleet Summit
In recent years, new technology solutions have transformed the way the world moves freight and become a key component of the global supply chain. Just last year, business consulting firm, McKinsey & Company, reported that 93% of transportation companies plan to maintain or increase their spending on technology in the next three years. In this new interview with FreightWaves for their Enterprise Fleet Summit, Kelly Williams, Vice President of Enterprise Product Management for Trimble, had a chance to dive deep into the opportunities and pitfalls technology solutions bring to fleet operations and productivity.
“Most of the trucking that happens in our industry [depends on] the customer service reps, driver managers, dispatchers, who are in the technology every day, making things happen,” said Williams about the important role that technology plays in transportation and how it impacts daily work. “We owe it to this industry to significantly and impactfully make a difference in that technology.”
Trimble is proud to offer a deep portfolio of technology solutions designed to empower transportation professionals at every level—from drivers to back office staff to maintenance technicians—to do their best work. These solutions are built on decades of experience by people who have worked in transportation and understand the challenges fleets face every day.
Speaking on the subject of whether or not technology is a boost or a hindrance on productivity, Williams highlighted the need to focus first on the essential elements of a fleet’s business: “I think there’s a couple of things that could come into play here. One, the core operating system [of a transportation company] really has to be the foundation of what we try to impact, and then you layer on top of that the robust integrations that we need to connect things… But the other thing I think is vital to this is having that deep trucking industry knowledge.”
Going a step further, Williams remarked that the future of technology in freight movement depends on refining processes and connectivity.
“We have to level up. We’re not just moving things to the cloud. We have to be streamlining workflows, we have to be automating things. It has to be a continuous improvement mindset. For me, this is something we absolutely have to take on in the industry,” said Williams.
