McLane Company Inc. Overhauled Their Analytics and Integrations with Trimble Solutions

Founded in 1894, McLane Company Inc. is one of the largest distributors in the United States, serving convenience stores, mass merchants and chain restaurants with more than 750 vehicles, 80 distribution centers and 25,000 team members. With an operation this large, McLane’s carriers found themselves overwhelmed by a massive amount of data they sought to analyze for business strategy and market insights. But because their fleets often manually input order and delivery data, the information they collected was inconsistent and unreliable. 

“Previously our on-time delivery reporting accuracy was as low as 70% and riddled with manually edited data. There were several operational improvements that needed to be addressed that were not visible,” said James Griffin, Director of Operating Systems & Scheduling for McLane.

However, McLane reinvigorated their data strategy by integrating numerous Trimble solutions into their operations to streamline and enhance the way they manage dispatch and delivery data from across their company. This included automated visibility, workflow and route planning and optimization solutions, such as Trimble Instinct driver and back office workflow automation, CoPilot navigation, TMW.Suite TMS, PC*MILER routing, Appian route optimization and much more. Their primary goal was to consolidate data from multiple sources and formats to provide more useful and accurate route analytics around on-time deliveries. 

Now, with the utilization of Trimble’s compatible solutions, McLane has automated their processes and this effort resulted in improved on-time delivery reporting, operational efficiency, greater customer satisfaction and more. And partnering with Trimble has allowed McLane to reach new levels in the realm of KPI analytics, leading them toward greater success as a whole company. 

“Removing the ability to manually edit the data and reports has exposed multiple operational improvements that have enhanced our customer experience and satisfaction as well as created operational efficiencies within our organization,” said Griffin. “We’re now consistently averaging over 90% accuracy vs the previous 70% accuracy. In addition, we have significantly improved our ability to manage rerouting, which has resulted in greater customer satisfaction.”
